Michael S. Redden
Michael practices in the areas of estate planning, asset protection, closely held business issues, tax controversy and tax resolution. Michael is able to assist clients with both domestic and international matters. Michael has advised families and business owners concerning matters implicating four continents.
Michael works to develop solutions that not only address his clients’ legal concerns, but are also practical from a business and family perspective. When working with family businesses, Michael is sensitive to family issues, and family governance as well as the financial considerations involved. Michael counsels clients on most legal and tax issues that concern family wealth.
Michael represents clients before the Internal Revenue Service and state departments of revenue. Michael defends clients through audits, audit reconsideration, notice of deficiency, federal and state tax liens, offers in compromise, innocent spouse, injured spouse, unfiled tax returns, and currently not collectible status. Michael helps clients resolve their tax issues and move on with their lives.
Michael deals with complex trust and business structures that help clients deal with the estate tax, gift tax, and generation skipping transfer tax. Michael also helps create Integrated Estate Plans that provide asset protection to individuals and families.
Michael has experience dealing with structures with a situs in Minnesota, other states, and other countries.
Michael is admitted to Minnesota state courts, Minnesota Federal Courts, and the United States Tax Court.

Experience
- Represented many closely held businesses through sales transactions both to the next generation and third parties.
- Developed estate and business planning structures utilizing trusts in South Dakota and Nevada to maximize tax savings and asset protection Ultra High Net Worth families.
- Represented widow to address unpredicted development with her late husband’s estate plan to address potential estate tax liability of over $5 million.
- Represented Trustee of an Irrevocable Life Insurance trust through a viatical sale of an underperforming insurance policy to ensure that the trust had the liquidity necessary to plan for future estate tax liabilities even though the life insurance policy failed.
- Represented couple with ties to Canada and Lebanon to develop their estate plan and address issues involving tax, and titling issues in both countries.
- Represented couple to develop an estate plan that addressed assets in a country that does not recognize most common American trusts used in estate planning.
- Represented real estate investor to develop an asset protection structure to be both tax efficient and protect assets from potential creditors and divorce.
