Shannon M. Wachter

Shannon brings practical experience to her clients, having clerked for the Honorable Mary E. Madden and the Honorable Anne K. McKeig in the Hennepin County District Court – Family Division. Shannon’s experience as a law clerk gives her insight into the court’s considerations on family law issues. In addition, Shannon managed a federally funded grant through the Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women called the Family Court Enhancement Project. Shannon collaborated with national domestic violence experts, judges, court administration leadership, attorneys, arbitrators, advocates, mental health providers and other community stakeholders to implement institutional changes to improve the court’s response to custody and parenting time issues for families experiencing domestic violence. Shannon has presented nationally to multidisciplinary groups about implementing system change in courts to better account for the dynamics of domestic violence in family court proceedings.

Shannon graduated from the University of St. Thomas School of Law in Minneapolis, Minnesota in May 2015. While in law school, she co-founded the Family Law Society with three other students. She began her client advocacy and litigation experience at the University of St. Thomas’ Interprofessional Center for Counseling and Legal Services where she participated in the Immigration Clinic and the Advanced Immigration Clinic. As a student certified attorney, she represented clients seeking asylum in the United States as a result of persecution or a fear of persecution in their home countries. While in law school, Shannon volunteered for Minnesota Assistance Council for Veteran’s legal clinics. She also mentored high school students through the College Possible program.

Shannon graduated with a degree in Ethics and Business Law from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. Prior to starting law school, she lived in Maryland, where she worked for a nonprofit that focused on immigration issues.
