Attorney Spotlight: Steven Forrest

In what area of law do you practice and why did you choose this?

I practice all forms of litigation and have been a litigator throughout my career. My background includes practice in numerous areas of law in a wide variety of venues. I have experience in criminal law (both as a prosecutor and a criminal defense attorney), family law, child protection and termination of parental rights, personal injury and wrongful death, guardianship and conservatorship, civil commitment, probate, and representing individuals and businesses in a wide variety of civil litigation. I similarly have wide-ranging experience as an attorney for the State, representing the Minnesota Department of Health, the Minnesota Department of Corrections, the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry, and various other State boards and agencies. Every case and every client is unique, and I adapt my diverse litigation background to the individual needs of each client.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

My father was a carpenter, and I worked construction with him throughout my youth, and I always thought I would follow in his footsteps.

When did you decide you wanted to be a lawyer?

At the very end of college, at the recommendation of a professor, I took the exam and later applied for law school. I have been in love with litigation ever since.

What do you like best about practicing law at H&J?

Throughout my career, I have worked with some of the best litigators in Minnesota. My colleagues at H&J are unparalleled in their expertise, and it is a privilege to be surrounded by so many incredible litigators at H&J.

When you are not working, what would people find you doing?

Primarily spending time with my daughters. I am also an avid gardener and for years have raised chickens and bees. I also fish whenever I get the opportunity.

What is a recent good book you read?

“What are people for?” by Wendell Berry

What is your strongest asset?

Intellectual curiosity. I love learning new things, including new areas of law.
