With a background in music as a professional film composer, Alex has a unique perspective on creatives’ work, lifestyle, and legal needs.  As an attorney, Alex aims to empower creatives to gain deeper understanding and greater control over the business life of their works.  Alex is an attorney at Hellmuth & Johnson in the Entertainment Law, Intellectual Property and Business & Corporate Law groups.

Alex advises businesses of all sizes in a variety of industries including filmmakers, event vendors, musicians and performing ensembles, composers, artists, authors and game and software developers how to manage their rights and maximize their market potential. Alex’s background as a composer and music business owner, and her entrepreneurial mindset and experience “in the trenches” of the entertainment industry provide a common bond with clients who put their hearts and souls into both their creative and business endeavors.

Creatives typically seek Alex’s help for transactional matters, including business formation/structure, drafting and negotiating agreements, licenses, vendor agreements, and intellectual property matters such as clearance, risk analysis, market strategies and licensing agreements and intellectual property registration and enforcement.

Alex is the Chair of the Sports, Art and Entertainment Law Section of the Minnesota State Bar Association and has taught music business courses at the Institute of Production and Recording, and Saint Thomas University. Alex is an engaging speaker who makes legal subjects tangible for creatives, students, and business owners.  She has been a panelist and presenter for Minnesota Music Coalition, Springboard for the Arts, Film North, Winona State University, and the University of Minnesota. Alex is the author of a chapter on music transactions in the latest edition of the Intellectual Property Deskbook for Business Lawyers (published by the American Bar Association). She was named a 2021 Up & Coming Attorney by Minnesota Lawyer. Outside of the law, Alex composes film scores and concert music and plays the viola.
