As tribal nations in Minnesota engage in the commercialization of adult-use cannabis before state-licensed dispensaries are legally open for business, questions about regulations and safety are coming to the forefront. Although tribal groups, such as the Leech Lake Band’s Cannabis Regulatory Commission, are committed to safe and compliant products, they are not governed by state regulations and therefore are not required to meet Minnesota’s strict compliance standards. Carol Moss, a cannabis industry attorney at Hellmuth & Johnson and Gov. Tim Walz’s appointee to the Minnesota Cannabis Advisory Council, states that consumers in this emerging market will expect products from licensed dispensaries to be tested and determined safe for use.
