Hellmuth & Johnson attorney Brendan Kenny won reinstatement of a Native-owned market’s participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), following the United States Department of Agriculture’s disqualification of the market based on alleged “trafficking” of SNAP benefits.
When the USDA disqualifies a SNAP retailer from participating in SNAP, the results can be devastating for the retailer and the local community. On June 15, 2023, Mr. Kenny secured for his client, a Native-owned market serving a predominantly Native community, the reinstatement of its ability to participate in SNAP. This not only saved the market from shutting its doors, but aided the economically disadvantaged community it serves.
“Winning for my client and the community they serve—in the face of dogged opposition from the government—is among the most satisfying parts of my job,” Mr. Kenny stated.
