In what area of law do you practice and why did you choose this?
My primary practice area is litigation. Litigation is enjoyable to me because of its competitive
nature and because every case is unique.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
A scientist.
When did you decide you wanted to be a lawyer?
When I figured out that I was better at reading and writing than science and math.
What would you be doing if you weren’t a lawyer?
I would probably be working in business or politics.
Tell us about a mentor who made an impact on your career.
My dad has always been a great mentor. As a fellow lawyer, he gives me frank and practical
advice that has proven to be invaluable.
What do you like best about practicing law at H&J?
Everyone here takes their job very seriously, but at the same time, the lawyers and staff at H&J
are kind, supportive, and fun to be around.
What is the best career advice you have received?
I have been told many times that it is always possible to beat a more experienced lawyer—you
just need to be more prepared.
What is your favorite Twin Cities restaurant?
Rojo Mexican Grill in St. Louis Park.
What is your favorite part of practicing law?
My favorite part is when I finally figure out a complicated legal issue after extensively
researching it. Hard work pays off.
What might people be surprised to know about you?
I was named after Jack Nicklaus (the legendary golfer).
If you have an out-of-town visitor, what are the “must see/do” things in the Twin Cities?
The Twin Cities are home to many great breweries. Utepils (in Minneapolis) is my favorite.
