In what area of law do you practice and why did you choose this?
Real Estate — my father and my grandfather worked as self-employed builders and remodelers, so real estate law feels like home.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I considered many of the traditional professions — teacher, doctor, pastor, attorney.
When did you decide you wanted to be a lawyer?
I had a mentor at the University of Minnesota – Morris, Thomas McRoberts, who encouraged me to consider law school. The curriculum looked interesting, and I was attracted by the opportunity to help people work through complex issues as an attorney. I received a full-tuition scholarship from a top 20 law school, which sealed the deal.
What do you like best about practicing law at H&J?
I enjoy working as a team with attorneys in other practice areas, such as business law, mergers & acquisitions, estate planning, and litigation.

European vacation with my wife
What is your favorite vacation spot?
The north shore of Lake Superior — Duluth, Two Harbors, Gooseberry Falls, Split Rock Lighthouse, Betty’s Pies
When you are not working, what would people find you doing?
When our kids were growing up, I enjoyed participating with them in scouting and cheering them on in swimming, dance, and soccer. Now that they are adults, the highlight of my week is “family dinner,” rotating who hosts each weekend.
What is your favorite part of practicing law?
I enjoy assisting my clients with real estate transactions and helping them accomplish their goals for their businesses and families.
Who is your hero?
I look up to Old Testament heroes (especially Joseph and Daniel) and the apostles.
What is a recent good book you read?
Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir (audiobook)
