Attorney Spotlight: Brian Niemczyk

In what area of law do you practice and why did you choose this?

General litigation, but particularly employment law and landlord-tenant law.

When did you decide you wanted to be a lawyer?

I always knew that I wanted to be a lawyer. It probably started with me obsessively watching episodes of “Law & Order” as a kid.

What do you like best about practicing law at H&J?

The fact that we have an expert in practically every area of law on staff. If I have a question about an area I’m not familiar with, or if a client has a need outside of my area, there is usually someone here who can help me.

What is the strangest legal question you have ever been asked?

I once received a call from a guy who wanted to sue his ex-wife’s boyfriend for “alienation of affection.” It’s a really old common law claim that was abolished in Minnesota many decades ago. We learn about it in law school, but I never thought I’d hear about it in real life.

What is your favorite vacation spot?

The Cancun area of Mexico. Great beaches, great weather in the winter, and lots of interesting history.

When you are not working, what would people find you doing?

I spend most of my non-working time coaching my kids in competitive basketball and baseball. It takes a lot of time and energy, but it’s been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
